A Cuppa Comfort |  A Midlife Evening Delight

A Coffee Lover’s Tea Revelation

I’ve got to tell you, I enjoy coffee. A LOT! Okay, I have a coffee problem. But I digress because I’m not here to talk about coffee today. Let’s talk tea. And I do enjoy a cuppa of hot tea (or two) in the evenings.

I’ve always enjoyed a good cuppa of hot tea every now and again, but since this past autumn, my enjoyment has become a regular nightly routine for me. As the days grew shorter and the nights cooler, there was something so comforting about wrapping my hands around a warm mug. And it’s just stuck around.

My favorite tea has always been Lady Grey, with the occasional chamomile, English Breakfast, and red raspberry leaf. Recently, I’ve added two new flavors: Black Currant and English Afternoon tea. And I have to say, they do not disappoint. Let’s talk about my three go-to teas: Lady Grey, Black Currant, and English Afternoon.

Lady Grey

Oh, Lady Grey, how I adore you! This delightful blend is a close cousin to Earl Grey but with a bright, citrusy twist. Like Earl Grey, it’s infused with bergamot but with orange and lemon peel. The result is a fragrant, uplifting tea with a smooth, slightly sweet flavor. It’s perfect for those evenings when you need a little pick-me-up without the caffeine jolt of coffee.

Black Currant

This tea is a revelation! I’m honestly surprised it took me so long to discover it. The rich, dark fruitiness of black currant is simply divine. I liken it to a sweet, plummy prune, but in the most delicious way possible. It’s warm, comforting, and just a little bit tart. I have to say, this just might be my new favorite.

English Afternoon Tea

English Afternoon tea is a classic for a reason. It blends Ceylon and Assam teas, creating a smooth, balanced, and robust flavor. It’s not as strong as English Breakfast, making it perfect for an evening beverage. It has a malty taste and is very smooth. It’s the ideal tea for a relaxing evening.

Enhancing the Experience

Of course, a good cup of tea can be made even better with a few additions. My personal favorite is cream and sugar. It brings out the sweetness and adds a creamy, irresistible richness. Honey is another great option, especially with herbal teas like chamomile. A squeeze of lemon or orange can also add a bright, refreshing note to citrusy teas.

You can also try

Spices: A dash of cinnamon or nutmeg can add warmth and depth to black teas. For chai-like flavors, try adding cloves, cardamom, or ginger.

Milk Alternatives: If you prefer, try almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk. Each adds a unique flavor and texture.

Flavored Syrups: A small amount of vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut syrup can add a touch of sweetness and complexity.

Fresh Herbs: A sprig of mint or a few leaves of lemon balm can add a refreshing herbal note.

Citrus Zest: Adding lemon, orange, or lime zest can intensify the citrus flavors in your tea.

Sweet and Savory Pairings

No tea time is complete without a few treats! I love a simple shortbread cookie, a slice of icing drizzled cinnamon bread, honey cornbread, or a cranberry orange or raspberry muffin for sweet pairings.

You can also try

Fruit Tarts: The sweetness of fruit tarts pairs beautifully with the subtle flavors of afternoon tea.

Madeleines: These delicate French sponge cakes are perfect for dipping in your tea.

Chocolate Truffles: A rich chocolate truffle is a decadent treat to enjoy with a strong black tea.

Gingerbread Cookies: The warm spices of gingerbread complement the flavors of many teas.

Fruit and Nut Bars: A healthy and satisfying option for a mid-evening snack.

Miniature Cheesecakes: Small and satisfying, these are great with fruit-flavored teas.

For savory options, I like a small plate of cheese and crackers with mini sausages, pepperoni, and summer sausage, or a cucumber or egg salad sandwich, which can be a delightful accompaniment.

You can also try

Mini Quiches: These savory pastries are a perfect pairing with afternoon tea.

Smoked Salmon Canapés: A sophisticated and flavorful option.

Olive Tapenade on Crostini: A Mediterranean-inspired pairing.

Miniature Sausage Rolls: A classic savory treat.

Egg Salad Sandwiches: A simple and satisfying option.

Cheese Scones: A savory twist on a classic treat.

My Tea Wrap-up

So, there you have it: from my morning coffee to evening tea time. I’ve found a new level of comfort and enjoyment in these simple routines, whether reading or unwinding while watching TV in the evenings; a warm cup of tea is the perfect companion.

I encourage you to explore the tea world and discover your favorite blends. You might just find a new nightly ritual that brings you as much joy as it brings me.

I’m always up for trying new teas, do you have any ideas for me to try? Let me know in the comments.

Cheers to a warm and comforting cuppa!
